Our course will grapple with questions, topics and case studies central to the subject of Women in Development (WID) and Gender & Development through the lens of cultural diversity. What actions have governments, civil society stakeholders, NGOs and private institutions taken to advance women’s rights and gender equality? How do these global and local initiatives match up with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 or with the more recent Oxfam Canada feminist ‘score card’? We will undertake critical and much-needed explorations within the fields of representation and leadership, violence against women, conflict and crisis, climate change, and communication and media for development drawing from a wide range of texts by western and non-western scholars and experts, such as Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Lourdes Beneria, Shirin M. Rai, Nora Cruz-Quebral, Aili Mari Tripp and Naila Kabeer.
