Financial management is crucial for the success of any organization. Successful organizations watch their finances very closely, reducing the probability of failure and increasing the likelihood of success. Most businesses have a well-structured finance department responsible for looking after the accounts and finances of the company. NGOs and mission-based enterprises, on the other hand, are less likely to consider financial management to be a priority and lack adequate financial knowledge. Moreover, many directors of NGOs or MBEs end up having to take on most of the financial management

This course introduces essential financial and operational strategies and frameworks used in the management of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other Mission-Based Enterprises (MBEs). The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the core frameworks of NGO and MBE financial management and operations, including developing a clear mission statement, establishing organizational accountability and transparency, organizational structure and design, financial management and reporting, financial controls and audits, marketing, fundraising, grant writing and operational management of organizational missions. We will explore core managerial frameworks in the NGO and MBE context, and then examine case studies of how these can be effectively deployed and where problems tend to occur.
