American global strategy has begun to shift away from the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), initiated after the September 11, 2001 attacks and toward “Great Power Competition” under the Trump administration. This course will first analyze the causes and consequences of GWOT and then how GWOT has begun to merge with Great Power Competition, with an emphasis upon US geo-economic rivalry with Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, among other states. The course will then discuss the ramifications of the Great Power Competition in terms of alliance formation, the global arms race (including cyber-warfare), energy rivalries, as well as upon the exploitation of global resources and the environment.
